Bloody Disgusting has exclusively revealed that Lionsgate, the studio behind the iconic SAW franchise, and Red Barrels, a leading horror game developer, have announced a deal to adapt the terrifying Outlast series into a feature film.

Roy Lee, the renowned horror producer behind films like It, Barbarian, and Late Night with the Devil, will be leading the charge in adapting the popular video game Outlast into a feature film. Lee has promised to capture the same raw terror that has captivated over 37 million players worldwide.

GT Berry, the writer behind The Burrowers and Hellbenders, will be penning the screenplay. Berry expressed their excitement, stating, "Red Barrels has been pushing the boundaries of horror gaming for over a decade, and now is the perfect time to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.

With Lionsgate's history of producing high-quality horror films like The Strangers: Chapter 1 and Imaginary, combined with Red Barrels' reputation for groundbreaking horror games, the upcoming Outlast film is poised to deliver a thrilling experience that stays true to the series' core elements, such as immersive atmosphere, terrifying sound design, and unrelenting tension.

Lee commented, "When Outlast was released in 2012, it redefined horror gaming and elevated the level of immersion. Its deep story provides a perfect foundation for a film that delves into the psychological and physical horror at the heart of the series. I'm incredibly excited to bring this world to new audiences and longtime fans.

David Chateauneuf, co-founder and creative director at Red Barrels, added, "As horror fans in all its forms, we at Red Barrels are huge admirers of Roy Lee's work and Lionsgate. Both classic and contemporary horror films have influenced us, and the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or nightmare, come true.

Since its inception in 2012, the Outlast series has evolved as a narrative-driven survival horror franchise, beginning with the original game, followed by Outlast: Whistleblower and the standalone Outlast 2. The latest installment, The Outlast Trials, released in 2024, introduced a four-player co-op experience. Beneath the psychological horror that defines each Outlast title, there's a recurring theme of power abuse and corrupt institutions.

The new Outlast film marks an exciting new chapter for the franchise, transitioning from the gaming world to the cinematic realm.
